The South Africa Innovation Summit  started a collaboration with the wine industry looking for innovators providing digital technology solutions for wineries and agro-technological industries.

The Winetech Pitching Den 2019

On July 30th, the Summit announced, in collaboration with Vinitech and the French Embassy in South Africa, the award for the best South African start up at the Winetech Pitching Den 2019. 

Vinitech and the French Embassy will award the winning South African start-up with a round-trip flight to France, a transfers to Bordeaux and tickets for the Vinitech Global Tradeshow 2020. The winning start-up will have a  stand in the start-up area and will be present at the Forum des enterprises. In addition, the winning start-up will receive an invitation to the Vinitech gala, where their company will also be promoted. Vinitech is the reference event for technological innovations in the sector of vegetable, wine and arboriculture production in Bordeaux; it attracts over 45,000 and 800 exhibitors from over 70 countries.

The partnership between the French Embassy, ​​the SA Innovations and Vinitech Summit aims to enhance the work of start-ups that deal with digital technologies; yet solutions for wine industries, facilitating market access and commercial opportunities both in France and in South Africa.

The competition will focus on the following areas: climate change; reclamation and water resources; genetics; machine learning, artificial intelligence and big data. The sectors that increase efficiency, profitability and environmental sustainability will be considered. Digital technology for wineries will be highlighted during the competition.

Digital technology awards for wineries

First prize: investment offer of R 5 million and three weeks of acceleration in Silicon Valley, Lagos and Budapest. 
Second prize: investment offer of R 2.5 million and two weeks of acceleration in one of the three locations. 
Third prize: investment offer for R 1 million and acceleration in South Africa.

Winetech Pitching Den winner will get automatic access to the African Cup competition on September 13, 2019, where they will compete with other finalists for a prize of 8.5 million Rand in funding ..

The Unicorn Group, a pan-African investment company focused on innovative ideas, start-ups and early-stage companies in the technology sectors; it will sponsor the awards.

The winners will receive investment opportunities and risk capitals and will have links to the market, allowing them to transfer their innovation to over 650 wine producers in the country. Moreover, they will also have incubation and entrepreneurial and entrepreneurial acceleration to accelerate the growth of them and their products.
